Butternut squash is a seasonal favorite for soups and sides throughout autumn and winter. This said, many of us have been in the precarious situation of beginning to prepare a squash dish and stared down at the butternut squash in fear. So, to save persistent googling and stress for preparing your next butternut squash dish, find our guide to cutting a butternut squash below.
Step 1:
Lay the squash on its side on a firm and stable surface like a cutting board. Grab a sharp knife for cutting.
Step 2:
Taking a vegetable peeler, apply firm pressure and scrape off the outer peel of the squash with vertical strokes. Complete this all the way around the squash. Note: you can leave some skin around the ends of the squash since these will be discarded.
Step 3:
Using a sharp knife, cut each end of the squash off, leaving a cylindrical squash behind.
Step 4:
Cut the remaining squash a little below the center, leaving the squash in two unequal pieces.
Step 5:
Slice the smaller squash portion in half. Take a spoon and carve a small circle around the seedy portion of each squash section. Scoop out the seeds and discard.
Step 6:
Slice the smaller seedless squash portion into half moon shapes. Dice each half moon if you wish.
Step 7:
For the larger portion of seedless squash, slice into 5-6 long pieces. Continue to cut until the long pieces are able to be diced.
